A complete list of upcoming changes to Instagram during 2025
Tech giant Facebook has been quietly testing out new features on Instagram before rolling them out in official updates. If you’ve missed some of the recent updates, here’s a look at the upcoming changes and updates you might have missed.
### Say Goodbye to **Story Highlights**
Story Highlights used to be displayed as a row of circles at the bottom of users’ profiles, allowing them to highlight specific stories with the ability to customize their display image and name. But after a period of testing last year, this feature will be moving toA dedicated tab within profiles, which can be found between the grid and Reels tabs, will feature a heart-shaped icon.
Instagram head Adam Mosseri acknowledged in November that the change could be controversial, saying, “We’re looking to improve the look of profiles and increase the content that appears at the top while simplifying the design.” He noted that one idea being explored is integrating the highlights feature with the grid.
### **Trail Reels** feature
Last month, Instagram began allowing users to upload “Trail Reels,” videos that can only be viewed by a small group of users at random. The move is intended to give creators a chance to test out their ideas without worrying about poor performance.
According to a Meta post, “If you’re happy with the performance of your Trail Reel, you can share it with your followers with a single click, or set it to automatically post if it’s performing well.”

### Reset recommendations
In November, Instagram began testing a feature that would let users reset content recommendations, especially as the app increasingly relies on algorithms to personalize the experience. Instagram displays content from unfollowed accounts based on past interactions.
Meta confirmed that users around the world will soon have the ability to completely reset their recommendations through the “Content Preferences” option in the app’s settings.
